More snow has fallen over the last few days, and conditions are improving significantly, however a shallow snowpack still exists.  Big Flat SNOTEL site is currently reporting 24” and the Merchant Valley SNOTEL site is reporting 21”.  Snow is possible throughout the day today, with up to 4” possible.  Tonight, there is a significant chance for lots of snow!  The NOAA forecast is calling for a 100% chance of snow tonight with up to 25” possible at Eagle Point Ski Resort—more snow is possible on the higher peaks.  The heaviest snowfall of the storm is likely to occur between 8 pm Saturday evening and 2 am Sunday morning.  The high peaks will be breezy, with wind coming from the west with gusts as high as 34 mph.  Tonight, the wind will pick up on the peaks to 26 – 32 mph with gusts as high as 48 mph. Daytime high near 16°F and lows with wind chill down to -8°F.  Watch out for wind loaded slopes and cornicing on high peaks.  Be cautious when in avalanche terrain, and have a back up plan if you start noticing any red flags.
